Do Republican EVER for ONE MINUTE stop thinking about sex? With all their talk about "Hollywood morality" and "Hollywood values" and the "homosexual menace" and their anti-abortion rhetoric about women who "got themselves pregnant", combined with the tendency of some of their followers to hire rentboys and prostitutes and cheat on their wives, it makes me wonder just how much better a world would be if these people could just have sex willingly and happily like normal people. Then perhaps they wouldn't pull crap like this:

Yesterday, House Democrats were forced to scrap the COMPETES Act — a jobs bill to increase investments in science, research, and training programs. Despite initial bipartisan support, the bill went down suddenly as House Republicans staged a parliamentary ambush to insert a provision that would fire any federal worker “disciplined for violations regarding the viewing, downloading, or exchanging of pornography.”

The unadulterated partisan politics were on full display shortly before the vote. Rep. Lynn Jenkins (R-KS) unveiled the GOP porn amendment, announcing that it would be a referendum on the use of porn on government computers. However, Rep. Bart Gordon (D-TN) quickly took to the floor to denounce the minority party’s “embarrassing” gimmicks to “undermine an important bill for my 9-year-old daughter, for your kids and your grandkids”:

JENKINS: If you think spreading pornography with a government computer is an act that should lead to dismissal, then vote for this motion. [...]

GORDON: For God’s sakes. And when it gets to the conference, we’ll take care of that even more. But everyone raise your hand that’s for pornography. C’mon raise your hand. Nobody? Nobody is for pornography? Well I’m shocked so I guess we need this little bitty provision that means nothing is going to gut the entire bill. This is an embarrassment. If you vote for this, you should be embarrassed.

Using a “motion to recommit,” the amendment scared enough Democrats to back the porn amendment, thus forcing Democratic leaders to pull consideration of the bill, possibly postponing it for weeks. House Republicans celebrated their success in obstructing the jobs bill, and promised more of the tactic in an interview with CQ. “We certainly should do more of this type of thing,” said Rep. Lamar Smith (R-TX).

Besides, they get to feel all warm and tingly in the groin when they talk about porn on the House floor.

Too bad the Democrats didn't have the balls to call their bluff. After all, conservatives are the most likely users of porn:

A new nationwide study (pdf) of anonymised credit-card receipts from a major online adult entertainment provider finds little variation in consumption between states.

"When it comes to adult entertainment, it seems people are more the same than different," says Benjamin Edelman at Harvard Business School.

However, there are some trends to be seen in the data. Those states that do consume the most porn tend to be more conservative and religious than states with lower levels of consumption, the study finds.

"Some of the people who are most outraged turn out to be consumers of the very things they claimed to be outraged by," Edelman says.

James W. Van Brunn likes Teh Kiddie Porn:

Authorities discovered child pornography on a computer used by James W. von Brunn, the 88-year-old white supremacist accused of killing a security guard at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum last week, according to court documents filed by the FBI.

BI agents said they recovered the desktop computer during a search of the Annapolis apartment where von Brunn had lived for the past two years. The pornography was disclosed in a search warrant affidavit seeking to make a more thorough inspection of the computer. Authorities did not disclose the type or extent of the child pornography they found on the computer during their first search.

Like I always say, scratch the surface of a wingnut, find a perv.

The Sexual Insanity of the Wingnut Male

I don't know what it is about males of the wingnut variety. When they aren't obsessing about how gay people have sex, they're soliciting that very same gay sex in airport men's rooms. When they aren't trying to ban abortion to punish women who won't keep their legs closed, they're in a Louisiana brothel paying prostitutes to dress them up in diapers; embroiled in that peculiar madonna/whore stew that actual women have never understood; that nonsensical idea that's akin to what I used to call the Double Standard After the Fact, which goes something like this: If she fucked me, that means she fucked everybody, and since she fucks everybody, she's a whore and unworthy of the very same attention I gave her yesterday.

It comes from low self-esteem, of course, but when you're confronted with this weird circular illogic in your college years and early twenties, it can be extremely disconcerting.

Wingnut men tend to never grow out of this phase, this phase in which the brain hasn't formed gray matter yet and the lower motor functions and the other parts of the brain that simply keep the body going are located in the head of the penis. I don't know if the arrested development causes wingnuttia, or if the arrested development characterized by wingnuttia is a symptom of the failure of the brain to migrate north into the cranium.

I'm not sure how else to explain this:

Ashley Blazer Biden is the 27-year-old daughter of Senator Joe Biden our new Vice President and running mate of Barack Obama in the 2008 presidential election. She is a social worker who is employed with the Delaware Department of Children, Youth and Families.  Biden is also a board member of the Delaware organization.

In other words, ladies, if you ever meet this guy, run away and don’t give him your name, because if you don’t fuck him when he thinks you should, he’ll get all creepy stalkery.  Douchebag went to Tulane, and he was, even as a young man, a creepy old man.

When you read about creeps like this guy, or like Rich Lowry, who thinks that when Sarah Palin winks at a TV camera, she's winking at him through the TV screen, or like Tom Coburn obsessing about Oklahoma schools being full of lesbians, or the pervasive notion on the right that if you don't ban abortions, pregnant women will go have them between Pilates class, the nail salon appointment, and the afternoon cup of Yolato -- you have to wonder just what kind of sick, twisted crap happened to them when they were children.

Don't do the crime if you can't do the time

My better nature thinks it's bad form to be happy when someone sees no way out but suicide. But in this case, I'll make an exception:

A federal prosecutor who was arrested in an Internet sex sting after he allegedly traveled to Michigan from Florida to have sex with a 5-year-old girl hanged himself in a Michigan federal prison Friday morning, Detroit television station WDIV-TV reported.

John D.R. Atchison, 53, was put on suicide watch after he used a bed sheet in an attempted suicide in September.

Detroit police confirmed Atchison's suicide death at 10:14 a.m. Friday. They have not released any details.

Atchison was a married father of three and a respected figure who coached girls' softball and basketball in a park a few blocks from his home in a well-to-do Florida beach community.

Atchison had been communicating with an undercover sheriff's detective from Macomb County, Mich., who was posing online as the fictitious girl's mother and arranged for him to have sex with the child, police said.

He was arrested carrying presents for her, including a doll and earrings, and sexual materials, officials said.

"There were no red flags. He was normal. He went to work at the courthouse Monday through Friday. It's not like he carried dolls to the ballpark," said police Lt. Rick Hawthorne, who knew Atchison for more than 10 years.

Side note: I really wish that news coverage of cases like this didn't refer to "having sex" with the child. One does not "have sex" with children. It's called rape.

At this point, I think it's safe to say that so-called "family values conservatives" are, to a man (or woman), deeply twisted and sick individuals trying to cover their own tracks.

Here's another one, and a particularly egregious example:

A federal prosecutor from Florida was ordered held in custody Monday after he appeared in U.S. District Court in Detroit on a charge that he flew to Detroit intending to have sex with a 5-year-old girl.

John David R. Atchison, 53, of Gulf Breeze, Fla., an assistant U.S. Attorney in Florida's northern district, is expected to appear again in court for a detention hearing on Tuesday.

He was caught in an Internet child sex sting run by the Macomb County Sheriff's Department and the FBI and arrested Sunday when he flew into Detroit Metropolitan Airport from Pensacola, Fla., according to a criminal complaint filed in federal court in Detroit.

A sheriff's deputy posed as a mother who was interested in finding someone to have sex with her children, in a sting that has already netted a California paramedic and numerous other alleged pedophiles from around the country.

According to the complaint, Atchison reassured the sheriff's deputy who was posing as the child's mother that he would not hurt the 5-year-old because he goes "slow and easy," and "I've done it plenty."

Although the article does not mention party affiliation, Atchison is, apparently, a registered Republican. I guess he's another of those fine, upstanding Administration lackeys hired by the United States Justice Department.
