Why am I not surprised?

Via Americablog comes this little tidbit that won't be reported in the media:

The Keystone XL pipeline, awaiting a thumbs up or down on a presidential permit, would increase the import of heavy oil from Canada's oil sands to the U.S. by as much as 510,000 barrels a day, if it gets built.

Proponents tout it as a boon to national security that would reduce America's dependence on oil from unfriendly regimes. Opponents say it would magnify an environmental nightmare at great cost and provide only the illusion of national benefit.

What's been left out of the ferocious debate over the pipeline, however, is the prospect that if president Obama allows a permit for the Keystone XL to be granted, he would be handing a big victory and great financial opportunity to Charles and David Koch, his bitterest political enemies and among the most powerful opponents of his clean economy agenda.

Because maybe if he shovels a couple more billion dollars into the Koch brothers' pockets they'll be nice to him.

There is no longer anything this President can do to convince me he represents me one tiny iota.

Dictatorship in the heartland

It appears that Scott Walker, otherwise known as The Man With No Soul (and you can see it in his cold, dead eyes), is planning to run the state of Wisconsin like a complete and utter totalitarian dictatorship under his control (emphasis mine):
Following the lead of Michigan GOP Governor Rick Snyder, Walker is said to be preparing a plan that would allow him to force local governments to submit to a financial stress test with an eye towards permitting the governor to take over municipalities that fail to meet with Walker’s approval.

According to the reports, should a locality’s financial position come up short, the Walker legislation would empower the governor to insert a financial manager of his choosing into local government with the ability to cancel union contracts, push aside duly elected local government officials and school board members and take control of Wisconsin cities and towns whenever he sees fit to do so.

[snip]

Should these reports prove accurate, Walker’s plan would resemble-if not directly mirror- the legislation signed into law by Gov. Snyder of Michigan which gives Snyder extraordinary powers to take over municipalities when he determines them to be in financial trouble, further permitting him to actually fire locally elected public officials when he deems it desirable.

Gov. Snyder’s extraordinary law became all too real this week when Emergency Financial Manager, Joseph Harris, appointed by the Governor to take charge of Benton Harbor, Michigan, issued an order which took away all powers of the city’s elected officials.

Yes, this has really happened right here in the United States of America.

Walker’s plans give further credence to the notion that the efforts of the GOP governors with Republican majorities in their state legislative bodies are part of a coordinated plan to enforce a right-wing agenda designed to not only destroy state, county and municipal employee unions, but to take control of local governments by replacing elected officials with appointees, both corporate and individual, of the state’s highest executive officer.

Such a law would additionally give Walker unchallenged power to end municipal services of which he disapproves, including safety net assistance to those in need.

According to my sources, the plan is being written by the legal offices of Foley & Lardner, the largest law firm in the state, and is scheduled to be introduced to the legislature in May of this year.

NOW can we say that the right-wing Republican Koch brothers agenda is NOT about any kind of freedom, other than for corporations to run roughshod over our lives and our ability to function as a democracy?

Will we tolerate this?

I'm afraid it's too late to do anything but. The only tool we have is at the ballot box, and Americans proved themselves last year to be too stupid, ignorant, and gullible to be trusted with something as important as the vote. Perhaps there is a small hard core that still believes in the Teabagger agenda, at least until it hits them personally (as it will). But most people who voted-by-tantrum last year had no idea what they were actually voting for. Republican governors overturning local elections by fiat, Republican legislatures passing stupid legislation codifying debunked claims into law about a President into law for the sole purpose of keeping him off the ballot, partisan Republican election officials possibly rigging election results -- these are all evidence that it is already too late to prevent the relentless march towards complete corporate oligarchy.

I hope you enjoyed America. Because you don't have it anymore.

And this will happen to every Democratic president in perpetuity

...because Republicans will never, ever, ever, ever regard a legitimately elected president as a "real" president. George W. Bush, whose first term was handed to him by a partisan Supreme Court, and whose second term was tainted by clear and obvious vote suppression in Ohio (something that Mark Kirk is trying to do in Illinois next month), was regarded as legitimate by Republicans, but Barack Obama, who won with 56 percent of the vote and no shenanigans, is not legitimate -- because he is a Democrat.

And just as Republicans tried to do with Bill Clinton, they are going to try to remove this president from office by ginning up some phony "scandal" once they take over Congress.

Jonathan Chait:

Hear me now and believe me later: If Republicans win and maintain control of the House of Representatives, they are going to impeach President Obama. They won’t do it right away. And they won’t succeed in removing Obama. (You need 67 Senate votes.) But if Obama wins a second term, the House will vote to impeach him before he leaves office.

Wait, you say. What will they impeach him over? You can always find something. Mini-scandals break out regularly in Washington. Last spring, the political press erupted in a frenzy over the news that the White House had floated a potential job to prospective Senate candidate Joe Sestak. On a scale of one to 100, with one representing presidential jaywalking and 100 representing Watergate, the Sestak job offer probably rated about a 1.5. Yet it was enough that GOP Representative Darrell Issa called the incident an impeachable offense.

It is safe to say that Issa’s threshold of what constitutes an impeachable offense is not terribly high. As it happens, should Republicans win control of the House, Issa would bring his hair-trigger finger to the chairmanship of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. The Sestak pseudo-scandal disappeared because there was no process to drive the story forward. Had Issa been running the Oversight Committee, it would have been the subject of hearings and subpoenas.

And it is not as if Issa’s interest in the Sestak case springs from some idiosyncratic obsession with the generally common practice of using executive-branch jobs to lure candidates out of the Senate. His taste in Obama-related scandal is catholic. In addition to the Sestak allegations, Issa has called for the investigation or disclosure of matters weighty and not-so-weighty, including the so-called Climategate e-mail controversy, congressional recipients of friendly loans from Countrywide, the methodology behind the government’s statistics on jobs “created or saved,” the Treasury’s prior knowledge of the AIG bonuses, the leaking of the Securities and Exchange Commission’s fraud suit against Goldman Sachs, the District of Columbia school vouchers program, all taxpayer-funded White House trips on behalf of Democratic candidates, the administration’s response to the BP oil spill and its drilling moratorium, National Labor Relations Board nominee Craig Becker’s possible conflict of interest, the “executive branch’s approach to food safety,” potential collusion between General Motors and the Treasury, and the firing of the inspector general of the Corporation for National and Community Service, plus many, many others.

This merely covers Obama’s first 20 months in office. No doubt more outrages would command Issa’s attention. Just as a rigorous IRS audit of a taxpayer is bound to turn up something, an investigation by the likes of Issa will eventually produce a scandal. Once you have grasped hold of the investigative machinery, the process drives itself. “We would never go looking for a scandal—they come to us,” Issa explained to National Review. “Typically, it is not the crime but the cover-up. The scandal comes when administration officials try to circumvent, not report, or distort what is happening.”

Obviously, Issa cannot impeach the president by himself. That would take a vote by the House of Representatives. But once a major figure like Issa puts impeachment on the table, it is impossible to imagine the rest of the party failing to go along. A December poll found that 35 percent of Republicans already favor impeaching Obama, with just 48 percent opposed and the balance undecided. That is a large base of support to impeach Obama for literally anything at all.

Once Fox News, Rush Limbaugh, Matt Drudge, and the like collectively decide that this or that incident represents an intolerable abuse of power by the Obama administration, the conservative base will go from supporting impeachment to demanding it. At that point, the acquiescence of the House GOP would become inevitable. Since Obama took office, whatever willingness the party establishment had to resist the impulses of its base has been submerged beneath a wave of right-wing primary challenges.

Republicans have NO solutions to the problems we face today. The Republican Party has become the party of lobbyists' checks, of scientific ignorance, of racism and bigotry and selfishness and greed; of theocracy and sore loserdom and utter contempt for the nation they wish to lead, as well as for the rest of the world.

The teabaggers and other morons who think that putting this bunch of lunatics back in charge is going to mean they get to have a job, keep their house, send their kids to college, and in generally sustain the life they've become used to, are in for a big surprise. Because while the Republicans are busy sniffing panties in the White House because they can't deal with the resounding smack they were dealt in 2008, bridges and roads will continue to deteriorate, the middle class will further disappear into the ranks of the poor, endless wars will continue to bankrupt this country, and they will end up presiding over a smoking ruin where a nation used to be.

But that's OK for them -- as long as they have the power, that's all that matters to them.

Just sayin' is all

Perhaps if Barack Obama had just gone and danced with the ones what brung him, he wouldn't seem like such a hapless dupe of corporatist Blue Dogs in his own party now.

But instead he listened to that little Napoleon Rahm Emanuel, who put most of them in there. And now the media smells blood in the water and is determined to turn Barack Obama into Carter II: Electric Boogaloo.

Nice work, Rahmmy. Did you get paid to do it?

Sold down the river

So how do YOU feel to now know for certain that Mr. Brilliant was right along, that the Democrats exist only to make us THINK we have a choice? How do YOU feel to now know for certain that your Senator doesn't represent you, he or she represents the insurance companies that shoveled boatloads of cash into their pockets? How do YOU feel to know that there is absolutely no one in government who gives a shit about whether you live or die? How does it feel to know that the only thing these so-called "public servants" care about is lining their pockets?

We always KNEW this about the Republicans. We've deluded ourselves for far too long that the Democrats are any different. Marginally less batshit crazy, yes. Marginally less in thrall to the Christofascist Zombie Brigade, yes. But that is no longer enough.

Congratulations, citizens! You are now living in the Corporate States of America:
After weeks of secretive talks, a bipartisan group in the Senate edged closer Monday to a health care compromise that omits two key Democratic priorities but incorporates provisions to slow the explosive rise in medical costs, officials said.

These officials said participants were on track to exclude a requirement many congressional Democrats seek for businesses to offer coverage to their workers. Nor would there be a provision for a government insurance option, despite President Barack Obama's support for such a plan.

The three Democrats and three Republicans from the Senate Finance Committee were considering a tax of as much as 35 percent on very high-cost insurance policies, part of an attempt to rein in rapid escalation of costs. Also likely to be included in any deal was creation of a commission charged with slowing the growth of Medicare through recommendations that would take effect automatically unless overturned by Congress.

"We're going to get agreement here," Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont., the Finance Committee chairman, said Monday. "The group of six really wants to get to 'yes.'"

Obama has outlined two broad goals for legislation he is struggling to win from Congress: expansion of health insurance coverage to millions who lack it, and reining in increases in costs.

Like bills drafted by Democrats, the proposal under discussion by the six Finance Committee members would bar insurance companies from denying coverage to any applicant. Nor could insurers charge higher premiums on the basis of pre-existing medical conditions.

Note how it doesn't say whether insurers can drop you if you become sick.

Here's how Max Baucus serves his real constituency.

America, as told by viral e-mails

This is the country you live in:
* If you grow up in Hawaii, raised by your grandparents, you're "exotic, different."

* Grow up in Alaska eating mooseburgers, a quintessential American story.

* If your name is Barack you're a radical, unpatriotic Muslim.

* Name your kids Willow, Trig and Track, you're a maverick.

* Graduate from Harvard law School and you are unstable.

* Attend 5 different small colleges before graduating, you're well grounded.

* If you spend 3 years as a brilliant community organizer, become the first black President of the Harvard Law Review, create a voter registration drive that registers 150,000 new voters, spend 12 years as a Constitutional Law professor, spend 8 years as a State Senator representing a district with over 750,000 people, become chairman of the state Senate's Health and Human Services committee, spend 4 years in the United States Senate representing a state of 13 million people while sponsoring 131 bills and serving on the Foreign Affairs, Environment and Public Works and Veteran's Affairs committees, you don't have any real leadership experience.

* If your total resume is: local weather girl, 4 years on the city council and 6 years as the mayor of a town with less than 7,000 people, 20 months as the governor of a state with only 650,000 people, then you're qualified to become the country's second highest ranking executive.

* If you have been married to the same woman for 19 years while raising 2 beautiful daughters, all within Protestant churches, you're not a real Christian.

* If you cheated on your first wife with a rich heiress, and left your disfigured wife and married the heiress the next month, you're a Christian.

* If you teach teach children about sexual predators, you are irresponsible and eroding the fiber of society.

* If, while governor, you staunchly advocate abstinence only, with no other option in sex education in your state's school system while your unwed teen daughter ends up pregnant, you're very responsible.

* If your wife is a Harvard graduate laywer who gave up a position in a prestigious law firm to work for the betterment of her inner city community, then gave that up to raise a family, your family's values don't represent America 's.

* If you're husband is nicknamed "First Dude", with at least one DWI conviction and no college education, who didn't register to vote until age 25 and once was a member of a group that hates America and advocated the secession of Alaska from the USA, your family is extremely admirable.

The new definition of privacy

It's not the right to be secure in your persons and papers, free of government intrusion. Not any more. No, the Bush legacy is going to be a new definition of privacy, and it involves trusting the government and private industry to keep the information they collect on your every move private:

A top intelligence official says it is time people in the United States changed their definition of privacy.

Privacy no longer can mean anonymity, says Donald Kerr, the principal deputy director of national intelligence. Instead, it should mean that government and businesses properly safeguards people's private communications and financial information.

Kerr's comments come as Congress is taking a second look at the Foreign Surveillance Intelligence Act.

This is what they wanted all along -- not a free country, but one in which the government and corporations are a consortium that monitor your every move: everyone you call, every web site you visit, every dollar you spend. America the Free has already fallen, and these people accomplished it without a single shot being fired.
