Unbelievable.
Hot on the heels of yesterday's news from the Scooter Libby defense team, that George Bush himself authorized the leak to the press of sensitive intelligence information relative to Iraq comes Alberto "Torture is Kewl" Gonzales saying he won't rule out wiretaps on domestic calls:
Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales left open the possibility yesterday that President Bush could order warrantless wiretaps on telephone calls occurring solely within the United States -- a move that would dramatically expand the reach of a controversial National Security Agency surveillance program.
In response to a question from Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) during an appearance before the House Judiciary Committee, Gonzales suggested that the administration could decide it was legal to listen in on a domestic call without supervision if it were related to al-Qaeda.
"I'm not going to rule it out," Gonzales said.
So what is that "something else"? Monitoring the calls of everyone who disagrees with Administration policy? Monitoring the calls of journalists who criticize the Administration? With this bunch believing that anyone not marching in lockstep with them is "aiding and abetting the enemy", what's to stop them?
I think it's time to step up my phone gossip. Nothing pisses off a wiretapper like detailed girl talk about shopping, movie stars, and shoes.
