Dear Harry Reid:

You might want to read what Frank Rich has to say today before you shoot off your piehole again about the Islamic cultural center planned for lower Manhattan:
So virulent is the Islamophobic hysteria of the neocon and Fox News right — abetted by the useful idiocy of the Anti-Defamation League, Harry Reid and other cowed Democrats — that it has also rendered Gen. David Petraeus’s last-ditch counterinsurgency strategy for fighting the war inoperative. How do you win Muslim hearts and minds in Kandahar when you are calling Muslims every filthy name in the book in New York?

You’d think that American hawks invested in the Afghanistan “surge” would not act against their own professed interests. But they couldn’t stop themselves from placing cynical domestic politics over country. The ginned-up rage over the “ground zero mosque” was not motivated by a serious desire to protect America from the real threat of terrorists lurking at home and abroad — a threat this furor has in all likelihood exacerbated — but by the potential short-term rewards of winning votes by pandering to fear during an election season.

You know what, Harry? The people who are being whipped into a frothing-mouthed frenzy over this aren't going to vote for you. Ever. Not even if you demand that all Muslims in this country should be summarily executed (which seems to be pretty much the prevailing view among the lunatic right -- that group you seem hell-bent on appeasing despite the fact that there's no appeasing them. So why not stand for what's right and let the chips fall where they may? You may yet lose in November. You may live in a state that would rather have a Christian Dominionist Jesus Talbani like Sharron Angle representing them in the Senate. But do you really want to represent people like that anyway?

Come on, Harry. Man up for a change. Look into your heart, not your career. Go read the Bill of Rights again. Then decide on which side you want to fall. If you stand up for freedom, and you lose, you may be driven out of Nevada on a rail. But there are still pockets of this country that aren't insane. You might even like them.

Oh, and Harry? Feel free to pass this on to that guy in the White House too. He may find this useful.

Hugs,

Jill
